Pizza...... It is a very tantalizing and mouth watering name......

It grabs your attention..... and a great aroma can make you feel hungry and a great taste can satisfy that hunger!

If you breakdown the basic structure of food you will see that all foods are same. A mixture of Carbohydrate, Vitamins & Minerals, Fat, Protein, Salt and Sugar, so is the PIZZA. At Okanagan Pizza we succeed in changing the taste with many combinations.

Many of you may be surprised to know that Pizza was first made in Greece. Pizza is derived from Pita or flat-bread, which was supposed to be a food for very poor people. Back in history, one Italian baker presented this bread (“PIZZA”) to an Italian Queen visiting Greece. The Pizza topped with cheese, tomato, and green herbs, together represented the colors of the Italian Flag…...and so the history of Pizza began!

Pizza, is a now a very popular food that can be made with many toppings. There is no limit to the number of combinations available and one pizzeria cannot offer it all. This explains why some people like one pizzeria over another. A great pizzeria also depends on the personalities of friendly staff who express an honest interest in the customers’ needs.

In general, I believe most people believe that Pizza is a non-healthy food. I do not agree with this statement and decided that Okanagan Pizza will only serve healthy varieties of wholesome, nutritious, fresh food.

In a journey to produce a better pizza base, I started adding natural protein to the dough. In time, and with trial and error, I established a final recipe that was agreeable to the standards I had set for myself and Okanagan Pizza.

In Further discussions with patrons, I understood that they also wanted the option of a Whole Wheat crust. We were able to develop a Whole Wheat crust with extra protein & sea salt. Sea salt is 90 times more expensive than regular salt but has 60% less Sodium, which is an important factor with those conscious of their general and heart health. We now carry a full line of pizzas with whole wheat crust.

Our customers that are on a gluten free diet have also requested pizzas with a Gluten free crust, I am proud to say that this is also now available at our location.

Our pizzas use less oil! When you order a Pizza from Okanagan Pizza, you will notice that your fingers are not greasy and there is very little grease residue on the delivery box.

All our vegetables are bought locally and are processed under strict guide lines and supervision. Meats are purchased frozen and come from No. 1 rated suppliers. Our wide range of meat toppings now include: Chicken and

Turkey

With the many improvements I have made in our overall production to create the very best in Pizza crusts and toppings; I am comfortable in saying, “That my Pizza, Okanagan Pizza; is healthy food!”

At Okanagan Pizza we are always creating new varieties of pizza toppings. You will find a series of Chicken Pizzas with different flavours like Tandoori, Curry and Butter chicken. As of December 9^th 2010 Okanagan Pizza has been selected as a Local Healthy Food Choices for School Sales in School District 23.

At Okanagan Pizza we make a healthy pizza with protein rich flour, less oil, sea salt, and use Part skim Mozzarella cheese.

We make our own Whole Wheat and Gluten Free crust pizzas. In our preparation we offer many versions of chicken pizzas to replace beef products.

Our 15” Pizza is cut in 8 slices and its $ 15.99 each, per pizza.

I have always loved eating pizza, but I always hated the after effects... Straight to the gut. Fatty, Greasy pizza that sits in your stomach for hours and stays there... Then I tried Okanagan Pizza...

I work for a store that does live on locations with local radio and for refreshments. We ordered OK pizza... All of our clients were truly impressed.!!

Not only was it VERY tasty, but it was not greasy, not fatty and everyone's reaction told the story.

They all wanted to know where it came from. I would highly recommend Okanagan Pizza for anyone like myself that enjoys eating pizza, but doesn't want to have a coronary after eating one...

Kelowna Pizza Taste testing event

Okanagan Pizza had a successful Signature Taste testing pizza event. 30 Guests and dignities tried the new pizza lines and commented on the crust, content and overall quality of the new pizzas.

Okanagan Pizza is promoting healthy whole wheat pizzas, an Alfredo Chicken Pasta on Cheesy Garlic Pizza, Tandoori Beef Pizza, Butter chicken and their newest creation a Dessert Pizza.

Due to the success of the event, the Alfredo Chicken Pasta on Cheesy Garlic Pizza will be added to the menu items, and the Dessert Pizza will be available as a special order item for special occasions; such as birthdays, weddings and party occasions.

The surprise of the evening was the number of times we were asked about gluten- free pizzas. At the present time RK Agrawal is doing some research on the viability of a Signature Gluten free pizza.

More and more Canadians are demanding healthier meal options for themselves and their families. Like it or not, Canadians are reading the nutritional labels on products before deciding whether or not to buy them.

In many homes today women still do the majority of household shopping and are the most likely to read the nutritional information on packaging.

By being proactive in asking customers what they want in a healthy pizza, Okanagan Pizza is positioning them as a leader in the pizza business.

Rk Agrawal came up with his new line of pizzas when he did surveys of local Kelowna pizza shops. RK says “What we found, were pizzas with a very high content of salt and very high in Trans fats. The pizza boxes were left with a heavy oil residue. This is when I decided to explore a new healthier pizza with our Signature line of pizzas”

Okanagan Pizza and their team of pizza specialist are working on developing a new whole wheat pizza crust with less sodium and lower in Tran’s fat.

Their newest conception is an Alfredo Chicken Pizza, Tandoori Beef Pizza, Butter Chicken and the newest creation: the development of a Dessert Pizza.

Their newest conception is an Alfredo chicken pizza, Tandoori Beef Pizza, Butter chicken , and the newest creation: the development of a dessert pizza.

I had the chance to recently try some of RK's (Rajnikant) Agrawal’s new pizza’s at OK Pizza, 104- 3699 Hwy. 97 N.

They were fantastic.!!!

If you like butter chicken you will love their new butter chicken pizza and the tandoori chicken pizza made with onion, chicken with home-made tandoori macula, mozzarella cheese and fresh herbs is also great.

The chicken alfredo pasta pizza is also a treat. R.K. makes all his pizzas fresh from scratch, including their healthy crust pizza dough, which is high in protein and low in fat.

If you would like to try the new ones, make sure you call ahead as they are hand-made fresh to order and take about 45 minutes from start to fi nish.

They are well worth the wait. My favourite is still the “cheesy garlic” one of their original signature pizzas. The guests I took loved both the butter chicken and tandoori chicken, but the butter chicken won out.

More and more Canadians are demanding healthier meal options for themselves and their families. Like it or not, Canadians are reading the nutritional labels on products before deciding whether or not to buy them. Women – who still do the majority of household shopping – are the most likely to read the nutritional information. By being proactive in asking your customers what they want in a healthy pizza, you’ll be well positioned to for a nutritional trend.

Food manufacturing companies have noticed and are even adding things like omega 3, DHA and extra iron to everything from yogurt to bread. Health Canada is demanding that restaurants reduce the amount of sodium in their dishes, although so far they’ve neglected to impose the same threats on all the “heat and serve” meal options at the grocery store and the recommended levels of salt are still in debate. There is a lot of discussion of banning trans fats, which New York City and British Columbia did last year. It makes a great deal of sense. A healthier population means fewer dollars spent on health care and an overall better quality of life.

The movement toward healthier meals was instigated by the consumer. Back in 2000, we began making a line of 100 per cent whole wheat pizza crusts and while it took time for them to catch on, today they represent 40 per cent of our sales. Paired with our low-fat mozzarella, a few vegetables and our lean grilled chicken breast they are not just healthy, they are also quite delicious. These days, Canadian consumers expect to find heart smart meal options on your menu – even for fast food. More and more chains are adding these options to their menus and are having positive feedback. There are many pizza places, chains and independents that offer whole wheat and/or multigrain pizza crusts to match the increasing demand.

Most places are reactive about this change in the marketplace. Several companies thought that it was simply a trend that would pass quickly and failed to accommodate what’s now an expectation. The companies that are constantly asking customers what they want, and exposing them to new options, are in a better position to be ahead of the curve and profit from this change in consumer tastes.

At Diana’s Gourmet Pizzeria, we have always polled our customers and created pizzas and menu items to cater to them. Our whole wheat crust began in very small batches, with free sample slices to gauge our customers’ reactions. About a year ago we started getting calls requesting gluten-free pizza. The number of calls increased every week, so we decided it would be wise to invest time in creating a recipe. We spent about six months developing a recipe and then incorporating it into our busy pizzeria that specializes in wheat pizzas. The day we launched our gluten-free pizza crust, we already had a list of customers who were eagerly anticipating it. Other than calling everyone on the list, it took very little effort to promote our new product.

Lately, we’ve been working with some folks at the Canadian International Grains Institute on perfecting a barley flour pizza crust. Barley is beneficial by providing both soluble and insoluble fibre, whereas whole wheat flour only has insoluble fibre. North American diets are severely lacking in fibre and our initial batches have had very positive tasting results from staff and customers alike. Just a little more tweaking to our recipe and we’ll likely add it to the menu as a taste of the month this year. Depending on the response, it may end up on our menu as a permanent heart healthy choice.

We’ve also been taste testing turkey bacon as another heart smart option. Many of our customers are baby boomers and have been told by their physicians to cut down on red meat. Initial customer reactions to sample slices with turkey bacon have been extremely positive, so positive that we brought it on for our featured taste of the month for December 2009. My prediction is that it’ll be a hit from the start and find its way onto our permanent menu.

Regardless of whether you thought healthy pizza was a fad or a fleeting trend, you have to be living under a rock not to notice the increased demand for healthier meals in 2009. This year will undoubtedly be more of the same, making it a great opportunity to asses how well your menu stacks up on the health front.

Estimates are that every person has 3 or 4 pairs at least in their closet that are not worn any more but still in good shape. We ask that you clean out your closets but convince your friends, neighbors and relatives to do the same. We ask that the shoes have no holes in the soles and in decent shape. All footwear including sandals and boots are accepted and needed.

It is also the GREEN thing to do. There are tons of discarded footwear in the landfills that when break down the toxic glue that holds our shoes together can leak into our water supply and atmosphere.
